You believe that being a wildland firefighter is all a wild adventure. You believe it's an exciting and dangerous job and that you'll get a great kick out of it. You're sure you want to be spending your summers fighting fire in the mountains and forests, and be a hero like the ones you've seen on TV and in the movies. It truly is a childhood dream that you don't wanna wake up from.
There's a simple test to see if you qualify for work as a forest firefighter. Fill a backpack with enough stuff to last you a week, then take half out again. Add some rocks to your pack until it weighs at least 20 kilograms (about 45 pounds). Then go on a cross-country hike. Keep a steady pace for at least 8 hours every day. Don't be afraid of steep and rocky paths.
You'll have to cope with less than 4 hours of sleep every night. No cheating. Play around with big logs and rocks. Try to haul stuff like that around whenever you come across it. Don't look where you're going so you're gonna trip often, and make sure you run into trees and rocks and prickly bushes as often as possible. Of course, if you eat and drink a lot you're gonna run out of supplies soon, so don't.

Don't be afraid of the wet and mud, or the heat and the dust. Never shower or take a bath! If you're still alive and happy after a week, you may well be suited to become a wildland firefighter.
